INCEST AWARENESS DAY
April 21, 2026
WHAT IS INCEST AWARENESS DAY?!
Incest AWAREness Day is a survivor-led movement dedicated to breaking the silence around incest and intrafamilial sexual abuse.
For millions of survivors, incest is a reality that has been hidden, minimized, or denied by families and society for generations. Survivors are often pressured to stay quiet, protect the family image, or carry the weight of shame that never belonged to them.
On this day, we refuse that silence.
We honor the courage of survivors who have spoken, those who are still finding their voice, and those who are simply surviving each day. We acknowledge the grief, the complexity, and the lifelong impact of abuse that happens within families.
Most importantly, we remind every survivor:
what happened to you was real, it was not your fault, and you are not alone.
OUR GOAL: To break the silence surrounding incest, challenge the stigma that keeps survivors hidden, and create spaces where survivors can speak their truth, find support, and be believed.
Choosing yourself is valid. You are not alone.
We envision a world where:
-
Survivors of incest are believed, not blamed.
-
The word incest is no longer shrouded in silence, but spoken with truth and compassion.
-
Communities and systems understand incest as a public health and human rights issue.
-
Survivors have access to trauma-informed care, justice, and safe spaces to heal.
WHY IT MATTERS:
-
Incest is one of the most under-reported forms of abuse because of shame, fear, and stigma.
-
Survivors are often told to stay silent to “protect the family” — silencing the truth and protecting the abuser.
-
Society avoids the word incest altogether, erasing survivors’ realities.
-
Media and popular culture have often sensationalized or fetishized incest, distorting public understanding and further stigmatizing survivors instead of centering their safety and dignity.
Incest AWAREness Day says:
We will no longer whisper.
We will no longer cover it up.
We will no longer let survivors carry the shame of what was done to them.
